The Republic of India joined the Commonwealth during 1947 on attaining independence and have been to thirteen Games, including Melbourne, since attending their first Games in 1934.

The National Olympic Committee of India was formed and recognised during 1927 and is responsible for organising India's participation in the Commonwealth Games.

India underpinned its status as an emergng power in world sport with an outstanding 69 medal haul in Manchester in 2002 and 50 in Melbourne in 2006 to take their overall medal tally to 272 achieved in twelve Games.

Traditionally, India have won their medals in boxing, badminton, wrestling and weightlifting, however this list has expanded to include shooting, athletics, hockey, judo and table tennis.
